Weekly Maritime Piracy Security Report - July 19th

 

1st Incident

 

Category: Boarding/Robbery

Date: 7th of July

Location: Pointe Noire Anchorage, Congo

Position: 04°44S - 011°47E

 

A merchant vessel was boarded during the early morning hours of July the 7th, while anchored at Congo's Pointe Noire Anchorage. The incident occurred at approximately 03:30 am UTC; two unarmed individuals boarded the vessel, stole two ropes and proceeded to flee in a white skiff.

Vessel & crew are reported safe. 

 

2nd Incident

 

Category: Attack/Possible Hijacking

Date: 13th of July

Location: Gulf of Guinea, Nigeria

Position: 0258N – 00440E

 

The Turkish-flagged, General Cargo Ship, PAKSOY 1 was the victim of a pirate attack during the evening hours of June the 13th, while the vessel was transiting through the Gulf of Guinea.

According to the Turkish Foreign Ministry, as a result of the attack, 10 Turkish nationals working aboard the vessel were kidnapped.

The Paksoy 1 had been transiting from Cameroon to the Ivory Coast when the incident occurred, some 125 miles southwest from the Brass Oil Terminal. 12 armed pirates boarded the vessel and attempted to abduct the unfortunate seafarers.

According to the vessel manager, Kadıoğlu Maritime, members of the crew successfully hid in the citadel. However, the pirates located a few crewmembers that had not managed to get to the citadel in time and threatened to kill all of them unless they surrendered.

The crewmembers of the Paksoy 1 proceeded to comply with the pirates’ request. As a result, 10 crewmen were kidnapped, and 8 were left onboard.

"We contacted those who were not kidnapped and found out that all crew members hid when the assailants boarded the ship. All of them had to come out of hiding when the assailants found some and threatened to kill them if the others did not come out. The assailants then picked 10 sailors at random among all the crew members and let others go,” said Numan Paksoy, Operations Manager for Kadıoğlu Maritime in a statement to the press.

Upon discovery, the vessel was towed to Ghana’s Tema Harbour where it remains.

The Turkish Ministry is in contact with both Nigerian and Ghanaian authorities in order to ensure the release of the captive seafarers.

 

3rd Incident

Date: 16th of July

Location: Strait of Singapore

Position: 1.0 10.23’N 103 39.09’E

 

A tug boat towing a barge was transiting through the Strait of Singapore, when it approached by pirates, during the early morning hours of July the 16th. The incident occurred while the vessels were underway, in the westbound lane of the TSS of the Strait of Singapore. 

The Master of the tug, Sung Fatt 31, notified the Singapore Vessel Traffic Information System (VTIS) that his crew noticed a group of individuals boarding the barge that they had been charged with towing. 

The robbers then stole an unknown number of scrap metal, that the barge had been carrying, and escaped into their sampans (a type of vessel used in Southeast Asia).

The Master of the tug proceeded to report the incident to VTIS and the vessel alarm was promptly raised. The Singapore VTIS notified both the Singapore Police and Singapore Coast Guard, as well as their Malaysian and Indonesian counterparts, and then proceeded to issue a safety navigational broadcast. 

There was no confrontation between the robbers and the crew. Both vessels & the crew are considered safe.
