The Kuwait-flagged Tankship, BURGAN collided with the Singapore-flagged Cargo Ship, X PRESS MAHANANDA during the morning hours of June the 14th while the vessel was trying to exit Chittagong Port, Bangladesh.

The incident occurred at approximately 08:30 am LT, near Guptaband point in the Karnaphuli channel area of the port.

The Mahananda was carrying over 700 containers from Sri Lanka and had just entered the port when it collided with the oncoming Burgan near the Chittagong Dry Dock and Boat Club.

As a result of the collision, both vessels suffered damages to their bow and were stuck in place.

Vessel movement in the Chittagong port was halted for over four hours, as the Port Authority attempted to dislodge the two ships.

Having brought over five tugs, the Port Authority finally managed to separate the vessels, and promptly moved them to a nearby dock at approximately 12:30 pm in the afternoon.

The Chittagong Port Authority has launched an investigation into the accident, so as to determine its cause and ascertain the extent of the damage on the two vessels.

The Karnaphuli channel is now again fully open to marine traffic.
