Two ferries serving the Merak-Bakauheni line collided near the port of Merak, Java, Indonesia in the afternoon of April the 22nd.

At approximately 16:30 LT, the ferry WINDU KARSA DWITYA collided with the ferry Virgo 18. The former was leaving the port of Merak while the Virgo 18 was approaching the port.

As a result of the collision, both vessels suffered extensive damage.

The Windu Karsa Dwitya suffered starboard bridge wing and fore deck hull dents and breaches while the Virgo 18 sustained damage across its stern.


Furthermore, one crew from the Windu Karsa Dwitya fell overboard during the incident and is still considered missing.

One passenger was also injured as a result of the collision and had to be hospitalized immediately upon arrival to Merak.

Following the collision, both vessels were taken to Merak, where all passengers proceeded to disembark.

Indonesia’s Basarnas national rescue agency has started a search & rescue operation in order to locate the Windu Karsa Dwitya’s missing crewmember while assessing both the vessels & the area for any sign of oil spills.
