Turkish freighter KARMATE ignored a desperate warning to change course when sailing en route from Izmir to Tekirdag and collided with Greek Navy gunboat ARMATOLOS in what may have been a deliberate collision.

The incident happened at around 0100 UTC on Friday 4th in Mayin Mytilini Strait between Lesvos Island, Greece, and the Turkish mainland as KARMATE was crossing the Strait in a northern direction.

In the aftermath of the collision, KARMATE managed to navigate into Turkish waters where it was drifting for some time until it was able to head towards Dikili port.

Initial reports indicate that it is not clear why KARMATE did not heed the warning to change course and why the warning was issued.

ARMATOLOS suffered only slight damages and was able to proceed with its onward journey.

Investigations are ongoing.
