Norwegian maritime authorities have named three suspects as part of their investigation into the collision between the tanker ship, SOLA TS and the Norwegian Navy Frigate, KNM Helge Ingstad.

The three individuals are, an officer aboard the Helge Ingstad, the pilot of the tanker Sola TS, and an employee working for the Fedje Vessel Traffic Service (VTS).

More specifically the SOLA TS pilot is suspected of being in breach of international navigation regulations, seeing as the tanker was lying in the water. Furthermore, there is some doubt as to whether the pilot issued the correct signals towards the incoming frigate.

Allegedly, the frigate’s bridge team was confused by the tanker’s lights, mistaking the vessel as part of the terminal itself.

Finally, the employee working for the Fedje VTS is suspected of dereliction of duty. According to the prosecutor investigating the case, the Fedje VTS had independent responsibility as traffic leader in the area, seeing as they serve a function similar to that of traffic police for the region.

The Frigate, Fedje VTS and Norway’s Defence Department have all refused to comment on the ongoing investigation

A defence attorney has been appointed to act on the SOLA TS pilot’s behalf, but they too have refused to comment on the accusations.
