Three crew members are thought to have drowned on Tuesday April 24 after a cargo ship sank in the Yangtze river estuary.
The Yangtze is the longest river in Asia and flows entirely within the People’s Republic of China. The cargo ship Shengsong 618 was sailing down the river when it got into difficulties and sank.
Photos show the Chinese registered vessel now resting on the riverbed with the bridge remaining visible above the waterline.
A helicopter was scrambled to aid with the relief effort and managed to airlift three crew members who had made it to the upper bridge. However, the other three who leapt in to the river are assumed to have drowned.
A search is underway for their bodies.
