The crew on a tanker have managed to stop armed pirates boarding the ship 45nm South of Bonny, Nigeria.

The ship’s crew issued a distress call for assistance via VHF, as they were approached by a speedboat yesterday at approximately 1100 local time.

The vessel increased its speed to 20kts forcing the speedboat to abort the chase after thirty minutes.

A ladder and two mounted machine guns were sighted on the speedboat. The number of armed persons attempting to attack is unknown. A ladder and two mounted machine guns were sighted on the speedboat.

The Nigerian Navy remained in contact with the vessel and a Naval vessel was deployed to Bonny to assist. Reports suggest the crew and vessel are unharmed.
