Six stowaways have been detained by authorities in Ghana after trying to smuggle themselves in to the Port of Tema.

The Tunisian nationals were caught under a joint operation between port security and the Ghana Immigration Service.

They were found to be hiding on board a vessel that had arrived from the Port of La Goulette in Tunisia.

Port Security Manager, Lt. Col Joseph Punamane, confirmed that the men had been arrested and reported one of the stowaways to be unwell. He was taken to the port clinic for medical attention. The remaining detainees were given food and water after suffering with dehydration and hunger from the journey.

The Ghana Ports and Harbour Authority are currently trying to increase security measures at the port to prevent stowaway attempts in the future.

Procedures are currently underway to return the stowaways to their country.
