More than 24 kilograms of cocaine has been found on board Cap San Sounio when Peruvian Drug Enforcement Agency Officers boarded the container ship as it docked at the Callao container terminal, Peru on Friday 29th June.
The shipment of drugs was divided into 31 individual packages and concealed within the sole of a shoe and hidden in a compartment on the vessel’s deck. The location of the drug concealment implies that crew members on board the vessel may have been complicit in smuggling the drugs on board the vessel.
The operation was lead by Deputy Prosecutor Maribel Mondragón, of the Second Provincial Prosecutor's Office who believes that the drugs were destined for somewhere in Europe, which is where the vessel was headed.
Officials have confirmed that one crew member has been detained and has been questioned as a suspect, whilst the vessel has been held at the container terminal.
