A ro-ro cargo ship suspected of illegally transporting Russian military weapons and vehicles has had its cargo seized. In February this year, ARX Maritime reported that URAL was being held by Tunisian authorities.

On the 15th February 2018 the ship was seized with what authorities described as being ‘everything you need to set up a military camp’, including armoured vehicles and weaponry. At the time, sources at the port said the majority of the cargo wasn’t properly documented, and some was omitted from all lists.

Russia denied the presence of armed on board.

The cost of the seized cargo is $4,15 million. The ship was en route from Novorossiysk Russia to Douala Cameroon. It has now been released, minus its cargo, and is bound for Alexandra, Egypt.

Ro-ro cargo ship URAL, IMO 7725386, GT 4994, built 1980, flag Panama, manager AKDENIZ RORO DENIZ TASIMA, Mersin, Turkey.
