A search and rescue operation has been launched after a seafarer fell overboard MSC Seaside in the US Virgin Islands yesterday.

According to the US Coast Guard the crewmember went missing around 8 nautical miles southeast of St Thomas.

The man has been identified as 37-year-old Michael M. Majaba, of the Philippines.

Reports from witnesses onboard say that he fell from the seventh deck of the ship at approximately 1am on Wednesday.

The Maltese-flagged vessel alerted authorities at the Coast Guard San Juan Command Centre at 4am that same day.

At this point it is not known whether the incident was intentional or an accident.

MSC Seaside was transiting from the Caribbean Island of St. Maarten to San Juan, Puerto Rico when the incident took place.
