A pilot attempting to board the United States-flagged Containership, MAERSK KENSINGTON died after falling off the ship, during the early morning hours of December the 30th.

The incident occurred at approximately 0430 hours while the vessel was approaching the Port of New York and New Jersey.

The unfortunate pilot has been identified as one Captain Dennis Sherwood, an experienced mariner with over 35 years at sea.

According to the initial reports, the pilot vessel had reached the containership, and Captain Sherwood was climbing the Jacob's ladder onto the bigger vessel.

Apparently, there was some sort of an accident during the climb, and he fell from the ladder. He was then rushed to a hospital in Staten Island where he succumbed to his injuries.

The United States Coast Guard has begun a full investigation into the circumstances surrounding the accident.

Captain Sherwood leaves behind a wife and four children.
