US authorities have stipulated that all sales of fuel are immediately stopped after they accused North Korea of breaching the UN sanctions on refined petroleum.
Authorities submitted a report to the UN Security Council North Korea sanctions committee stating that up until May 2018 North Korean tankers had been obtaining petroleum by illegal means as they have been partaking in ship-to-ship transfers. According to US policies, this is a direct breach of UN sanctions.
The report did not highlight which other countries were involved in the illegal activity, but did provide two case studies as supporting evidence, which involved a Belize-flagged ship and a Russian-flagged vessel.
This accusation is of detriment to the North Korean economy, as they rely on imported fuel to sustain their fragile economy. Korean authorities have not yet issued an official statement in reply to the US accusations.
