A fire which swept through the Port of Antwerp on Saturday has finally been brought under control, but authorities say it may continue to burn for several days.

The source of the fire was 5,000 tons of nickel oxide, which had been stored in a warehouse at the port. Almost half the consignment has so far been destroyed as the fire took hold.

The Port of Antwerp was forced to launch their disaster plan, which meant all ships and buildings within a two kilometre radius of the fire had to be evacuated due to health concerns associated with the smoke cloud which hung over the port area.

Local residents were also urged to keep all windows and doors closed and car traffic in the region was also temporarily stopped. However, authorities have stated that shipping traffic on the Scheldt and canal docks can continue to function as normal.
