An illegal operation to smuggle oil has been discovered at Tema Port in the Greater Accra Region of Ghana.
The Eastern Naval Command of the Ghana Navy have three people in custody in connection with the operations, as they were apprehended whilst transferring oil from a specially designed canoe into three oil tankers with the aid of a standby pump generator.
Inspection of the canoes showed that they had been intricately designed to obtain oil illegally whilst out at sea and transfer it to designated trucks at Tema Port. The transporters and three fuel tankers which were seized as part of the operation have now been impounded for further investigations.
Commander Isaac Mohammed Abu, Operations Officer at the Eastern Naval Command told sections of the media that the three people detained are believed to be members of a larger syndicate, who are still on the run.
He also issued a stark warning to others who may be working in the illegal transfer of oil as the Navy are working hard to patrol waterways and clamp down on this activity.
The three apprehend suspects are due to be handed over to the National Petroleum Authority (NPA) and the police for appropriate actions.
