An oil leak has caused a fire onboard Stellar Samba a large ore carrier, which is part of the Polaris Shipping fleet.

The fire reportedly started on 26th May in one of the generators whilst the ship was 50 miles off the Brazilian coast, heading from Caofeidian, China to Ponta de Madeira, Brazil. The quick actions of the crew prevented the fire from spreading further and saved the crew members from serious injuries.

The carrier has been drifting for four days since the fire occurred, but a tugboat is expected to arrive today, 30th May. The crew have worked tirelessly to re-store power to the troubled ship to enable it to sail into port, but Polaris Shipping dispatched a tugboat to assist the operation.

It is not the first incident to befall the South Korean owners, as previously Stellar Daisy sank off Uruguay in March 2017.

Brazilian authorities are now monitoring the situation and have sent a navy ship to oversee the Samba’s journey back to port.
