A workshop aimed at increasing maritime safety awareness in Nigeria has been hailed a huge success. The workshop was part of a campaign organised by NNPC and Total Upstream Companies in Nigeria (TUPNI) to train youths in the area.

The workshop was open to all boat operators sailing the Bonny waterways and was successful in training 100 youths in maritime safety skills.

Jackets and reflectors were provided as a token of thanks to all those who undertook the workshop.

Comrade Junior Albert, Chairman of the Bonny Marine Transporters Association (BMTA) said that the training received has improved the youths' technical skills on maritime affairs and also increased their knowledge.

He went on to acknowledge that the skills acquired by participants would help prevent future boating accidents and other water related incidents.

Prior to participating in the workshop, most of the boat operators in the area lacked basic skills and knowledge on maritime safety.

Comrade Junior Albert asked other oil companies in the area to mirror TUPNI’s gestures in the aspect of investment to improve maritime safety.
