The Chief Engineer aboard the Panama-flagged General Cargo Ship, MARIWIT was reported as missing during the afternoon of November 24th while the vessel was transiting off Penang, Malaysia.

The 49-year old Chinese national has been identified as one Jin Ying Lai. He was last seen in the engine room of the vessel, when the ship was 3.7 nautical miles off the port of Penang, having earlier left the Penang Harbour.

Mr Lai was confirmed as missing by a colleague at approximately 1730 hours, some 40 nautical miles west of Pulau Ketam, Selangor.

The Maritime Rescue Command Centre (MRCC) received an emergency call from the vessel, prompting the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) to launch a Search & Rescue mission at approximately 11:30 pm.

Complicating the rescue efforts is the size of the search area. The sector is approximately 679 nautical square miles long, as it extends from Penang to Selangor.

In an effort to expedite the search for the missing seafarer, the MMEA has sent a notification to all ships operating in the region, requesting them to share any available information that could aid with the rescue attempt.

The Mariwit arrived at its port of destination, Kemaman, Malaysia on November the 26th.
