The Singapore-flagged Container Ship, MAERSK SEMBAWANG was temporarily detained in the Spanish port of Algeciras, due to excessive emissions originating from the ship’s main engine.

The incident occurred on July the 17th, as the Container vessel was entering the Spanish port.

A number of local residents reported excessive smoke emissions, coming out of the ship’s funnel.

Their reports were echoed by a number of local environmentalist groups who in turn requested that the local authorities take action.

Spanish maritime authorities imposed a fine of €20,000 before the vessel could continue its journey, with the understanding that the ship would repair its engine before setting out again.

Local authorities went on record however to compliment MAERSK for its fast and speedy response, as the company immediately set out to fix the issue.

in addition, the Algeciras Port authorities were thankful to the local citizenry for reporting the incident in the first place.

They went on to say that they both encourage and request continued citizen collaboration in order to make sure that shipping companies that pollute the bay do not go unpunished.

The Port of Algeciras is Spain’s largest port. With over 30,000 ships entering the bay each year, the port sees more action than the rest of the Spanish ports combined.
