A crew member has been fatally injured when a mooring line snapped and recoiled on the bulk carrier Ansac Splendor. The tragedy unfolded on Thursday 28th June as the vessel moved along the dock at Longview Port, Washington.

Officials reached the vessel at 1.30am and found that the Chief Mate was also critically injured and transferred him immediately to Southwest Washington Medical Centre. Another two crew members also received non-life-threatening injuries.

A representative from the International Longshore Workers Union paid tribute to the fatally injured crew man, named as Byron Jacobs.

“He was a great co-worker and great family man. Words can't describe how upset we are. This is a tragic day on the waterfront, Byron loved his work and will be incredibly missed."

The bulk carrier is currently docked at the Port's Berth 5 whilst investigations into the tragedy are ongoing.
