A container ship has been left with significant damage after ramming in to a gate in Kiel Canal.
Akacia crashed in to the gate at Holtenau Lock while leaving Kiel Canal at around midnight on 19th February.
It has been reported that the ship was travelling at considerable speed when it collided with the gate, leaving it stuck to the gate. Severe damage to the breached hull is likely to complicate the salvage operation.
Damage to the engine control system is thought to be the cause of the initial crash.
A salvage operation is underway. It is thought that Akacia will be able to continue her route from Bremerhaven to St.Petersberg, Russia shortly. Traffic in the Kiel canal is limited, because only one Lock is available at the moment.
