The Vietnam-flagged Bulk Carrier, Pacific 01 collided with the Vietnamese fishing vessel, NA 95899 TS during the afternoon of June the 28th while transiting through the Gulf of Tonkin.

The incident occurred at approximately 13:00 LT, some 35 nautical miles south of Bach Long Vi Island, Vietnam.

Following the collision, the fishing vessel proceeded to immediately sink.

The bulk carrier immediately dropped its life raft and attempted a search & rescue operation to save the crew of 19 seafarers onboard the fishing vessel.

Thankfully, 9 crew members have been rescued thanks to the rapid response from the crew of the Pacific 01.

Unfortunately, however, the body of 1 seafarer was found at the scene, and 9 more are still considered missing.

The Vietnam Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre was immediately informed of the incident; they started a search & rescue operation that is currently still underway.

They dispatched four vessels to the location to search for the missing seafarers and requested assistance from their Chinese counterparts who sent out a number of vessels & aircraft to aid with the Search & Rescue mission.

According to information provided by the 9 rescued seafarers, the missing crew members were all asleep in the cabin at the time of the collision.
