In the morning of October the 28th, the European Union Naval Force (EU NAVFOR) successfully seized and destroyed a vessel that had been used by Somali pirates to attack the M.V KSL Sydney earlier this month.

Following the attack against the Hong Kong flagged Bulk Carrier, KSL Sydney, on October the 16th, EU NAVOR Force Commander, Real Admiral Alfonso Perez de Nanclares, ordered counter-piracy forces into the area in order to further investigate the threat.

EU NAVOR, Spanish Maritime Patrol and Reconnaissance Aircraft (MPRA) were ordered to fly over the area as to gain detailed information on suspected pirate activity.During surveillance, the MPRA identified a suspicious whaler that was being used by pirates.  The crew of the ESPS Castilla tracked down the vessel in question, and after finding it abandoned, seized and towed it out to sea, before destroying the vessel.

The attack on KSL Sydney that prompted this investigation, took place on October the 16th, approximately 340 nautical miles off Mogadishu, Somalia. A speedboat carrying four pirates armed with AK-47s attempted to approach the M/V, but as the pirates opened fire, the armed guards on board the vessels returned fire, and as a result, the pirates fled the scene.

Immediately following the attack, the naval interdiction force, EU NAVFOR – Operation Atalanta, was sent to investigate.

The attack on KSL Sydney marked the 2nd pirate attack in Somalia this year.
