Several crew members are missing after an oil research ship suffered an explosion while sailing near the Malaysia-Brunei border. 

The fire is said to have started in the engine room of GEOS, at around 0300 LT this morning and quickly engulfed the whole vessel. The 38 crew on board were forced to jump in to the water in Kuala Baram, northwest Kalimantan. 

The majority of the crew have been safety rescued, but 1 or 2 of the seafarers are reported to still be missing. Some of the crew are reported to have suffered burns and injuries. 

Nearby offshore tugs are said to be trying to extinguish the fire. According to latest updates as of 0500 UTC Apr17, the ship is burning out.

The vessel was part of research in to offshore oil exploration.
