Several people were injured when a large construction crane fell onto the Bahamas-flagged Cruise Ship, Oasis of the Seas.
The incident occurred in the afternoon of April 1st, at approximately 13:45, while the vessel was in dry dock at the Great Bahamas Shipyard.
Reportedly, one of the facility’s construction cranes tipped over and came crashing against the vessel’s superstructure.
The collision resulted in injuries to personnel aboard the vessel and damage to the cruise ship itself.
8 people were reported as having received injuries, but thankfully, none of them are believed to be life-threatening.
Furthermore, it would appear that the cruise ship has developed a starboard list due to the crane resting on its hull.
"We are responding to a construction site incident at the Great Bahamas Shipyard, where Oasis of the Seas is currently in dry dock. As of 1:45 pm EDT, we are accounting for the whereabouts of all site personnel and working with local authorities to determine if there have been any injuries. We are aware of damage to the dock structure and to construction cranes. We are assessing damage to the ship,” said Royal Caribbean in a statement.
The Oasis of the Seas is one of the world’s largest cruise ships, measuring an impressive 1200 feet from bow to stern, it can support over 6,300 passengers at full occupancy.
