Eight migrants were found hiding on board a cargo ship that had berthed in Waterford, Ireland.
The incident occurred during the evening hours of December the 4th, as the vessel was entering Waterford’s Container Port, Belview.
At approximately 1600 hours, one of the stowaways aboard the vessel made himself known to a member of the crew.
As soon as the incident took place, the Master of the vessel was notified, and he proceeded to immediately contact the Waterford Gardai.
A number of Gardai, accompanied by members of the Irish Immigration Bureau. The 8 migrants, all Albanian nationals, were brought to the Ballybricken Garda Station.
The immigrants, all complained of hunger and cold; allegedly they ‘ve had nothing to eat over several days.
The group of young men were given food and health check-ups, are expected to claim asylum in Ireland.
“Gardaí in Waterford were alerted to an incident today, Wednesday 4th December 2019, in Belview, Co Waterford where eight males were discovered by the crew in hiding on a bulk cargo ship travelling from France to Ireland.”
“Garda immigration officers attached to Waterford Garda station are currently dealing with the males and they will be processed under the immigration law,” said a Garda spokesman during a statement.
The group of migrants are expected to return back to France in the next few days, as per Irish immigration law.
