The Gibraltar-flagged General Cargo Ship, EEMS DART had to stop its journey after its crew located a number of stowaways hiding in the engine room.

The incident occurred during the morning hours of September the 28th; the vessel had been en route from Rouen, France to Drogheda, Ireland when the crew discovered 8 illegal immigrants in the ship’s engine room.

According to initial reports, the stowaways were all Albanian nationals, aged between 21 and 29 years old.

Upon their discovery, the crew contacted the French authorities who immediately directed the vessel towards the port of Cherbourg.

The cargo ship arrived at port later in the afternoon of the same day and the stowaways were met by gendarmerie and marine riflemen, who took the migrant party ashore.

Having offloaded the stowaways, the EEMS Dart continued along her voyage.

The immigrants are considered to be in good health and are presently in the custody of the French border police.

An investigation into the incident has been opened by Le Havre’s prosecutor office so as to determine the cause behind the incident.
