Several crewmembers have been arrested after 700kg of cocaine was found on board German containership, Vega Mercury.

The vessel was intercepted by an Algerian Navy Ship and a helicopter off Oran, Algeria on the 29th May. 

Spanish authorities had alerted the Algerian authorities after they has suspected drugs were on board the ship. 

Over 700 kilograms of cocaine was found hidden in boxes marked Halal Meat, inside reefer containers. 

14 people were arrested in connection with the haul and the vessel was taken to Oran the following day.

Authorities believe the drugs originated from Latin America with containers transshipped in Valencia. Vega Mercury is a shuttle container ship, trading in the Mediterranean.
