Four port workers and a port paramedic died after entering cargo holds filled with Palm Kernel.
Aggregates Carrier, Sumiei was docked at Banjarmasin port, south Kalimantan, overnight on Saturday 24th February.
Dockers went into the hold shortly after hatches were open, ignoring the crew’s warnings that the holds are to be ventilated for some hours before anyone should enter.
All 5 were immediately taken to hospital but died from Hypoxia. An investigation has been launched in to suspected negligence.
Palm kernel cargo hazards include oxygen depletion:
